The Painting

The old man didn’t know
If he had one more painting in him
Or what his shaky fingers could do
He had painted many things
Through the years so long ago
That now he could not figure what to choose
Then he looked out of his window
To see a bright sunset
And he knew this was a moment not to lose
He prepared his canvas well
Set his tripod on the hill
And decided to just let his fingers loose

The young man stood there weeping
At the graveside of his father
Who had passed away so swiftly in the night
For years they’d been apart
And just lately Dad had called him
And wanted to make sure he was all right
For the next few weeks they talked and talked
And grew quite close again
And the future started looking very bright
And as he stood there in the twilight
Tears flowed down his face as he fought
The hurt and anger at his plight.

God paints the sunset every day
A million different colors
Changing hue from ray to ray
And the beauty he creates
Cannot be matched by any man
Because every evening sunset
Is a gift that God created
To please the eye of every single man

The old man finished painting
And he laid down his brush
Then he heard a voice he hadn’t heard for years
The voice of God spoke softly
That he should write a note
And place it with the picture he held near
God instructed him to take the picture
To the local store
With the note neatly tucked in to the rear
And give the painting to a man
Who walked into the store with eyes
That had been filled with tears

The young man wandered aimlessly
Through the streets of town
Not knowing what direction he would go
When he happened in the store
Where the owner stood there smiling
The picture in his arms was his to show
And the tears once again
Welled inside the young man’s eyes
As he saw the painting staring out so bold
He could not believe what the painting
Of the sunset right before him
So looked it over once and one time more.

God paints the sunset every day
A million different colors
Changing hue from ray to ray
And the beauty he creates
Cannot be matched by any man
Because every evening sunset
Is a gift that God created
To please the eye of every single man

The young man finally spoke
And asked where this painting had come from
It was a sunset he had seen before
And the owner answered back
He had recently received it
Just 5 days had passed since he was done
The young man saw the sunset
That was there on the day
He last said my goodbye’s to my Dad
He’d been trying to find something
To remember him forever
And now this painting came into life

Now the owner said just wait
This picture is for you
No charge because it’s from the masters hand
And he handed him the note
That was penned upon completion
Of the painting of that sunset days before
As the young man read the note
The tears started flowing
A sob or two came forth amid the joy
And he read aloud in broken voice
The words the note contained
And the shop keeper just bowed his head in thanks

I painted this sunset just for you today
Knowing that your heart was full of pain
As you look upon its beauty
Just remember that I love you
For only God can paint the sunset just for you.

God paints the sunset every day
A million different colors
Changing hue from ray to ray
And the beauty he creates
Cannot be matched by any man
Because every evening sunset
Is a gift that God created
To please the eye of every single man

The Best Intentions

I’ve always felt I had a knack for knowing many words
Spelling was a friend of mine even the absurd
I have a big vocabulary which I count most dear
So when I looked at the word today I did not shed a tear

I took my little fingers and typed inchoate define
In just a blink a new word was settled in my mind
I started out this rhyme with the best intentions planned
It’s always fun to have a new word I can understand

I often find myself reading something in God’s Word
That stimulates my mind as I think about my Lord
Learning of His ways is so easy and close by
Will you pick up your Bible and let Him show you why?

Why He gave His Son to be your sacrifice
Why He gave a way to provide eternal life
Why He says today you can be free of your sin
Why not call to Jesus and ask Him to come in?

My Packed Truck

Been doing some destruction
Changing storage to a hall
To make room for a sliding door
That needs to be installed

The drywall and the two-by-fours
Are packed up in my truck
We’ll take them to the landfill soon
Once roads aren’t filled with muck

In life it’s so much harder”
To rid ourselves of stuff
We haul it all around with us
Until it hurts to much

Jesus came to take that mess
The weight that burdens you
Just ask Him to forgive your sin
He’ll let you start brand new

The Promise

The weather is not spring-like in Iowa this year
Along with frigid temperatures of snow we’ve had our share
But I know better weather is just around the bend
For God has made a promise that seasons will not end

One other promise He has made is always true as well
When we put our trust in Jesus our future will go well
For heaven is the promise He gives to all the saved
So ask Him to forgive you invite Him in today

Jesus Sweet Jesus

He’s the love of my life
He’s the Lord of my days
Jesus, sweet Jesus

He’s my sword and my shield
My refuge to stay
Jesus sweet Jesus

My fortress
My deliverer
My stronghold
My healer
My redeemer
My Savior
My Jesus sweet Jesus

No other God is like Him
No one can dare compare
This mighty name above all names
Is worthy of my praise

I’ll lift my hands and lift my voice
I’ll honor Him as I rejoice
He is my Lord I’ve made my choice
Almighty God is He

I’ll sing honor and glory
Unto His name
Jesus sweet Jesus

I’ll sing Hallelujah
In highest praise
Jesus sweet Jesus

Hallelujah in highest praise
Jesus sweet Jesus
Hallelujah in highest praise
Jesus sweet Jesus

The Gift Within

My grandpa was a laborer
On a dairy farm
He gathered eggs
And milked the cows
He started before dawn

The milk was pasteurized
Before it left the barn
But we held some
To drink for lunch
And some we had to churn

Churning is the process
Of solidifying milk
It agitates
And then creates
Butter in its place

The Word of God within us
Must be stirred up inside
When churned about
It brings results
That help us to survive

Stir up the gift within you
Make sure it’s shining bright
Then witness here
And then afar
So all can see the light

Mercy Pulled Me Through

So many times
My words have been harsh
My voice has been hard
My transgression large
So many times
That I cannot count
His mercy has pulled me through

So many times
My actions have harmed
My life did not charm
My soul cried alarm
So many times
That I have lost count
His mercy has pulled me through

Through all my failures
Through all my doubts
Through my iniquities
He brought me out
Through every time
I failed to show love
His mercy pulled me through

So from now on
I will be kind
I’ll help those in need
I’ll pray all the time
For everyone
He puts on my heart
That mercy will pull them through

His mercy is free
He placed it in me
I must let it shine
All of the time

Through all my failures
Through all my doubts
Through my iniquities
He brought me out
Through every time
I failed to show love
His mercy pulled me through

Still Curious

When I was a boy so curious
I loved to go out in the woods
We’d look for strange things
Great joy it did bring
To search for whatever I could

Now that I’m a man still curious
I have a new place to explore
The Word of God speaks
To all who will seek
It’s treasures my heart will implore

A Touch From the Lord

When Thomas heard the story
That Jesus had appeared
Just three days after He had watched Him die
He turned in disappointment
He just would not believe
Unless he put his hand into Christ’s side

A few days later on
They gathered once again
With Thomas in the middle of them all
Jesus then came back
Thomas touched His wounds
He bowed and worshipped Jesus with them all

He had to touch Him
Needing assurance
Needing his faith lifted up
There’s nothing more soothing
Then knowing He’s with you
We all need a touch from the Lord

There are times that I’m worried
When doubt washes through me
I’m not sure how things will turn out
It is then when I reach out
My Lord is so near me
I just need to touch my Lord

With my hands lifted up
Or my head bowed in prayer
With His praise on my lips
When I don’t feel Him near
If I’ll just call His name
He will come to my side
Then I’ll reach out and touch Him
In peace I’ll abide

I need to touch Him
Needing assurance
Needing my faith lifted up
There’s nothing more soothing
Then knowing He’s with me
We all need a touch from the Lord

Are You Ready?

I watch the sun as it rises today
Creeping its way up the sky
Bright rays touch the clouds
The birds sing aloud
Their anthem is raised up high

Someday soon God’s Son will return to earth
To bring all His dear children home
His radiant light
Will dazzle our sight
Well bow at the foot of His throne

Be sure today that you’re ready to go
When the trumpet shall sound that day
Trust in His name
Repent and be saved
Then lift up your voice in praise.
